By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police are investigating a report of obtaining money transfer by deception after a Belize City woman was allegedly scammed while attempting to purchase a cellphone online.
According to reports, at around 6:50 p.m. on Monday, March 30, 2026, a 31-year-old customer service representative of M&M Street, visited the Crimes Investigation Branch office and reported the incident.
The woman told police that on Sunday evening, March 30, while browsing a Belize Buy and Sell page on Facebook, she came across an advertisement for a red iPhone 11 valued at $450. The phone was being offered for $350 by a Facebook user identified as “Marcus.”
She said she agreed to the purchase under the condition that she would first pay a deposit of $200 to secure the phone, which was reportedly to be shipped from Caye Caulker via Tropic Air. The remaining $150 balance was to be paid after receiving the item.
On Monday, March 30, at about 1:35 p.m., the woman went to Atlantic Bank on Freetown Road, where she deposited $200 over the counter into an account under the name she was given. She then sent proof of payment to the seller, who responded with what appeared to be a Tropic Air receipt, stating that the package would arrive later that day at 2:30 p.m.
However, when she visited the Tropic Air office in Belize City, she was informed that the receipt was fraudulent and that no package had arrived in her name. Attempts to contact the seller afterward were unsuccessful, and she has not recovered her money or received the phone.
Police have since recorded her statement and collected copies of the transaction receipts. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.
