By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize Bird Rescue (BBR) is urging parrot owners to take advantage of the country’s one‑time parrot registration programme before the March 31, 2026 deadline, warning that the window to legally permit parrots already in captivity will soon close.

The BBR said the initiative is intended to protect both captive birds and Belize’s wild parrot populations. As Belize Bird Rescue explains, the programme “allows parrots already in captivity to be legally permitted and monitored to ensure they are healthy and properly cared for, while helping prevent new birds from entering the illegal pet trade after the deadline.”

Belize Bird Rescue is also reminding the public that “it is illegal to capture, buy, or sell any wildlife in Belize.” With parrot nesting season beginning, the group warns that people should not interfere with wild chicks. “Do not take baby parrots from the wild or buy baby parrots,” the organisation states.

How to Register or Report

  • To register parrots already in captivity, the public is advised to message the Forest Department WhatsApp Hotline at 610‑1524.
  • To report any illegal forest or wildlife activity, the same hotline — 610‑1524 — should be used.

Full details of the registration programme are available at www.belizebirdrescue.com .

Belize Bird Rescue continues to encourage public vigilance with its call to action: “See Something – Say Something!”
