By Breaking Belize News Staff: Italy’s Angela Carini made a tearful exit from her Olympic boxing bout just 46 seconds into the match on Thursday, following a punch from Algeria’s Imane Khelif.
The match, part of the women’s 66kg category round-of-16 in Paris, ended abruptly after Khelif, who had previously failed a gender eligibility test, landed a significant right hand, the Independent reports.
The fight began with a brief pause for Carini to adjust her head guard, but shortly after resuming, Khelif’s punch landed cleanly.
Carini immediately signaled to her team and chose not to continue, prompting the referee to end the bout.
As Khelif’s hand was raised in victory, Carini fell to her knees, visibly distressed.
She was heard telling her coach, “It’s not right, it’s not right!” before leaving the arena.
In interviews, Carini stated she had never experienced such a powerful blow in her career.
Khelif’s participation has drawn scrutiny due to her disqualification last year from the women’s World Championships in New Delhi, where she was excluded from the gold-medal bout after failing the International Boxing Association’s (IBA) gender eligibility criteria.
The IBA did not provide details on why the boxers failed their eligibility tests and did not require testosterone examinations for Khelif.
Reports indicate Kelif identify as neither transgender nor intersex although it had emerged last year that the 25-year-old had elevated levels of Testosterone meaning Kelif is biologically male.
The Paris Olympics boxing competition is being overseen by the Paris Boxing Unit (PBU), an interim body established by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The IOC stated at the tournament’s start that all athletes comply with the competition’s eligibility and medical regulations as outlined in the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit’s rules.
