PM stands by Oscar Mira’s political future

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Prime Minister John Briceño says he remains confident in the political future of Oscar Mira, even as the former Defence Minister steps aside from Cabinet while a government audit is carried out.

Speaking to the media, the Prime Minister was asked whether Mira is still politically viable in Belmopan. He responded that he had every confidence that he is. “He has been a good area representative and he has been a good minister, a competent minister, so I do believe that politically he will still be able to continue to connect with the people of Belmopan,” Briceño said.

The Prime Minister also addressed a question that has been raised since Mira took leave, namely why the minister, who most recently served as Minister of Home Affairs, needed to step aside when it is the Ministry of Defence that is being audited. Briceño explained that Mira felt his continued presence in Cabinet might give the wrong impression, and so chose to pull away while the audit is completed.

On the work of the Ministry of Home Affairs going forward, the Prime Minister said he expects Julius Espat, who has taken over the portfolio on an interim basis, to continue what Mira started. “I think Minister Mira was doing a very good job as the minister responsible for home affairs,” Briceño said.

Mira now becomes the second minister currently on a leave of absence. According to the Prime Minister, Minister Jose Mai is on a medical leave of absence. The audit into the Ministry of Defence, requested by the government, is expected to take about three months to complete, and no findings have been made at this stage.
