By Zoila Palma: Today, Oceana Belize is celebrating two ancient guardians of Belize’s coastline: the Morelet’s crocodile and the American crocodile.
“Crocodiles have patrolled these waters for millions of years. These apex predators are indicator species of a healthy environment because they thrive in clean water and intact mangrove forests. So, when you spot one relaxing along a lagoon or gliding through a mangrove channel, you’re looking at a sign that the ecosystem is doing its job,” Oceana noted.
World Crocodile Day is celebrated on June 17, and provides an opportunity for conservationists and animal lovers to come together to highlight these reptiles.
Oceana Belize encourages all to support conservation efforts that protect crocodiles and their habitats. Happy World Crocodile Day!!
