By Aaron Humes: The Organization of American States (OAS) is set to deploy an Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) to Belize in anticipation of the general elections on March 12, it confirmed via press statement today, Friday. The announcement came from OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro, who appointed Maricarmen Plata, a member of his cabinet, to lead the mission.

The mission will consist of 12 observers from seven different countries, tasked with evaluating key components of the electoral process. Their focus will include electoral organization and technology, political-electoral financing, and electoral justice.

Chief Elections Officer Josephine Tamai confirmed that the OAS’s involvement comes after an official invitation from the Belizean government, which expressed a desire for international oversight of the elections. “The OAS had expressed interest, and we also received a request from the U.S. Embassy to observe the elections. On election day, observers from both the OAS and the U.S. Embassy will be present across the country,” Tamai noted.

In preparation for the elections, Plata and her team will engage with a range of stakeholders, including electoral authorities, political party representatives, and government officials. This dialogue gathers various perspectives on the electoral process leading up to the vote.

On election day, the OAS observers will monitor polling stations from the moment they open until the counting of votes and the publication of results. Following the elections, the OAS Mission will compile a Preliminary Report detailing their observations and recommendations, which aim to reinforce the democratic and electoral processes in Belize.

This marks the fourth mission the OAS has conducted in Belize, following similar missions in 2012 and 2015 and a focused effort in 1997 on voter re-registration.
