By Breaking Belize News Staff: Two foreign nationals who admitted to entering Belize illegally have been fined and ordered deported after appearing in court on Monday.
They are 29-year-old Nicaraguan mother of three, Jhely Jaylen Rivas Witreth, and 32-year-old Mexican cook, Antonio De Jesus Ledesma, who had been living in Caye Caulker. Both pleaded guilty to failing to present themselves to an Immigration Officer upon arrival in the country.
Witreth broke down in court, explaining she came to Belize in search of work to support her children back home in Nicaragua. Despite their pleas, the Magistrate imposed fines of $1,000 each plus $5 in court costs. Unable to pay, both were remanded to the Belize Central Prison to serve three months or until the fines are settled.
The court also granted an application from the Immigration Department for both to be expelled from Belize once their sentences are complete.
