By Aaron Humes: Amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding the use of the People’s United Party Corozal Bay constituency office in Corozal Town, the newly appointed PUP Standard Bearer, Thea Garcia Ramirez, has clarified her position on the matter. Garcia-Ramirez said she invited area representative Elvia Vega Samos to continue occupying the premises if she deems it necessary, and to work out a schedule to share the office. Vega-Samos, however, is accused of twisting this request to share office, claiming to the press that she was being ‘evicted,’ and joining this office development with other complaints about the result of the standard bearer convention.
But she notes that it is ‘spiteful’ behavior considering that Vega-Samos is using office in a building owned by the PUP Corozal Bay Executive for free. Vega-Samos receives $2,300 monthly for the cost of renting an office and paying a secretary, adding up to $27,600 per annum. Because she has been using the constituency office free of charge since she took office in March of 2021, there has been no need to pay rent from this monthly allocation.
Ironically, according to Garcia-Ramirez, the office is seldom open and constituents have taken to going to Vega-Samos’s residence to try to see her, only to be escorted away by police. Vega-Samos is accused by the new standard bearer of failing to meet her constituents’ needs, and that is the primary reason she was voted out at a party convention, the sole contested convention for the PUP, a few weeks ago.
The new PUP Standard Bearer expressed that while the use of the office space would have been convenient for her, it is not essential for carrying out the party’s work. Expressing a spirit of cooperation and unity, the Standard Bearer emphasized the importance of unrelenting commitment, undivided focus, and love for Corozal Bay in carrying out their responsibilities.
Vega-Samos, the sister of the late David ‘Dido’ Vega, has not spoken publicly since she made her claims on social media, which the party almost immediately refuted.
