By Breaking Belize News Staff: A fatal traffic accident that claimed the life of a motorcyclist on Friday night at Mile 14.5 in the Sandhill area on the Philip Goldson Highway has left one man dead and another facing multiple criminal charges.

The deceased, initially recorded as a John Doe, was on Saturday identified by his common-law wife at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) morgue as 30-year-old Emin Leonardo Lino of Mosul Street, Belize City. Police say Lino died on impact.

Charged in connection with the incident is 41-year-old Salvadoran national Nelson E. Garcia Vega, a construction worker of Burrell Boom Village. Vega was arraigned late Monday evening in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court before Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison, where he was read four offenses: manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, driving without due care and attention, and driving with alcohol concentration above the prescribed limit.

No plea was taken, and with no objection to bail, Vega was granted bail in the sum of $6,000 plus two sureties of $3,000 each, which he met. He is scheduled to return to court on June 15, 2026 for disclosure.

According to police reports, the incident occurred around 9:43 p.m. on Friday, April 17, 2026. Officers responding to the scene observed a grey Toyota 4Runner with front-end damage positioned in the middle of the highway, along with a severely damaged black motorcycle without license plates on the roadside.

Two injured men—identified as Nelson Garcia Vega and Irandy Iair Vasquez—were found at the scene complaining of pain. A third man, later identified as Lino, was found motionless with severe head and body injuries.

Initial investigations revealed that Vega was driving from Sandhill Village toward Ladyville when he reportedly entered the lane of the oncoming motorcycle, which was traveling in the opposite direction with two persons aboard. The collision resulted in both riders being knocked off, with Lino sustaining fatal injuries.

Lino was transported to the KHMH, where he was pronounced dead on arrival at 10:59 p.m.

Police processed the scene, impounded the vehicle, and obtained a urine sample from Vega for forensic analysis to determine alcohol levels. He was later served with a Notice of Intended Prosecution and formally charged on Sunday, April 19.

Investigations into the fatal accident are ongoing.
