By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Police intelligence has led officers to a substantial drug stash on Ambergris Caye, with nearly a kilogram of suspected cannabis found hidden beneath an old refrigerator in an empty lot in San Pedro Town, and no one around to answer for it.
According to the Belize Police Department, at 7:00 p.m., acting on Special Branch intelligence, police conducted a search at an empty lot in the DFC area of San Pedro Town for illegal drugs and ammunition.
During the search, an officer’s attention was drawn to an old refrigerator sitting on the lot. Further checks underneath it led to the discovery of a black plastic bag. When retrieved and opened, the bag was found to contain transparent plastic bags wrapped in white tape, holding a green leafy substance suspected to be cannabis.
No one was in the immediate area at the time of the discovery, and the suspected drugs were retrieved and transported to the San Pedro Police Station.
At the station, the suspected cannabis was weighed, registering 991 grams, just shy of a full kilogram. The drugs were placed in an envelope, properly labelled and sealed, and handed over to the exhibit keeper as found property.
No arrests have been made in connection with the find, and the matter remains under police attention.
The near-kilo seizure ranks among the more significant recent finds on the island, and the intelligence-driven nature of the operation suggests police had the location marked. Whoever stashed the package under that refrigerator now knows it is gone.
