By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Premier Women’s League of Belize (PWLB) began its new season with two highly-even matches in Week One, and the early league rankings highlight Napoles FC as the top team with three points after their strong opening performance. Jewel Fury and Sagitun Girlz FC are tied on one point each, while Cayo Dreamers FC remain eager to earn their first points in the coming weeks.
Reigning champions Jewel Fury faced Sagitun Girlz FC in a dramatic 1-1 draw at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan on Saturday, March 15. Khalydia Velasquez gave Jewel Fury the lead in the 71st minute, but a last-minute equalizer from Kenya Perez in the 88th minute ensured the teams split the points and earned one each.
Meanwhile, Napoles FC secured a vital 2-1 win over Cayo Dreamers FC at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium, also in Belmopan, on Sunday, March 16. Jerlin Salazar’s 32nd-minute opener and Jayda Brown’s strike in the 49th minute proved decisive. Although Julie Ponce reduced the deficit for Cayo Dreamers FC in the 52nd minute, Napoles FC held firm to take all three points from their efforts.
After just one week, Napoles FC take an early lead, setting the tone for what promises to be an exciting season. Fans can look forward to more fierce competition as the PWLB unfolds.
