By Horace Palacio: Belizean politician Nancy Marin has spoken out against the recent body-shaming incident involving Kaya Cattouse and Tracy Panton, urging greater respect and solidarity among women in politics. In a social media post, Marin condemned the remarks as both “hurtful” and “shameful,” emphasizing that women should support one another rather than engage in personal attacks.
“It is already an incredible challenge for women in Belize to break into politics,” Marin wrote. “We face barriers in every direction – from gender biases to the constant need to prove ourselves worthy of a seat at the table.”
Marin stressed that while criticism is a common part of politics, targeting someone’s appearance is unacceptable, particularly when it comes from another woman. She expressed disappointment that a younger politician would choose to attack Panton, an accomplished leader and mother, instead of fostering a culture of mutual support.
“We must lift each other up, support one another, and ensure that women can thrive in every arena without fear of such attacks,” she added.
Marin’s comments come amid a wave of support for Panton from female politicians across Belize, many of whom have condemned Kaya’s remarks as damaging to the progress of women in leadership roles.
