By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A motorcyclist was left seriously injured following a road traffic accident on the Thomas Vincent Ramos Highway in the Stann Creek District, and the driver of a pickup truck has since been arrested.
According to the Belize Police Department, the crash occurred on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at around 8:10 p.m., between miles 23 and 24 of the highway, near the Uno Gas Station in Santa Cruz Village. Officers from the Santa Cruz Police Sub-Station responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, police found a red Ford Ranger pickup truck with damage to its left front bumper. Nearby, officers said they encountered the driver, who was staggering beside the vehicle and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. Police reported a strong smell of alcohol on his breath and noted that his speech was slurred, though he had no visible injuries. He was identified as 45-year-old Marvin Yat, a Belizean contractor of Santa Cruz Village.
Also at the scene, police found a man lying on the ground in severe pain, with a noticeable injury to his left leg that appeared to be broken. He was identified as 34-year-old Emmanuel Ical, a Belizean construction worker of San Roman Village, who had been riding a motorcycle at the time. His motorcycle was found nearby with damage to the handle and seating area.
Ical was issued with medico-legal forms and taken to the Southern Regional Hospital by family members. Police reported that Yat was cautioned and placed under arrest. When officers requested a urine sample, they said he refused, and he was subsequently informed that he had committed the offence of failing to provide a specimen without reasonable excuse.
As with any criminal matter, Yat is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
