By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City mother of five is out on bail tonight after spending four nights in detention for allegedly making a false statement online about Commissioner of Police (COMPOL) Clyde Chester Williams.

Nichole Gilda McDonald, 37, a matron at the Youth Cadet Corps under the Department of Youth Services was arrested on Friday, March 7, 2025. She was charged under the Cyber Crime Act for “using a computer system to disseminate a false statement.”

McDonald appeared unrepresented in Court #4 this morning before a Magistrate, where she pleaded not guilty to the charge. The allegations stem from a comment she made on Facebook on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, stating, “Clyde Williams, you are a big part of the drug dealers…,” which police claim was intended to harm the reputation of the COMPOL.

During the proceedings, McDonald attempted to explain that her comment was merely in response to a public discussion and not meant to cause harm. She further stated that she and COMPOL Williams were Facebook friends and that she was commenting on behalf of her political leader. However, the Magistrate advised her to reserve her defense for trial.

McDonald was informed that if found guilty, she could face a fine of up to $10,000 or a prison term of five years. With no objections from the prosecution, she was granted bail in the sum of $1,000 plus one surety of the same amount. Conditions of her bail include staying away from COMPOL Williams, refraining from contacting his family members, and avoiding further legal trouble while on bail. Additionally, she was ordered to stay off Facebook.

According to police reports, on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at around 8:30 a.m., COMPOL Clyde Chester Williams reported that he had noticed McDonald’s comment on Facebook the previous day. The comment was made under a post by Opposition leader “Shyne Barrow,” which referenced several recent murders in Belize City.

COMPOL Williams stated that he initially responded to the post but later discovered McDonald’s comment accusing him of being involved in drug trafficking. He reported that the statement was completely false and had publicly ridiculed him, damaging his reputation.

McDonald is scheduled to return to court on May 14, 2025, where she will face trial for the cybercrime charge.
