More than half the world has no US ambassador and Belize is one of those countries; Here is why that matters to us

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A striking new reality is emerging from Washington that every Belizean needs to understand: more than half of the world’s countries currently have no confirmed United States ambassador. Belize is one of them.

The last confirmed US Ambassador to Belize was Michelle Kwan, who served from December 2022 to January 2025. Following Kwan’s departure, David Hodge assumed the role of Chargé d’Affaires at the US Embassy in Belize. He was later replaced by Katharine Beamer, who has been leading the diplomatic mission in Belmopan since August 2025. More than a year after Kwan’s departure, Belize is still waiting for a Senate-confirmed ambassador to take up the post.

Belize is not alone in that wait.

According to NBC News, more than half of the world’s countries are currently without a confirmed US ambassador, with 103 vacant posts spread across every region of the globe. Africa alone has 41 vacant ambassador positions. North and South America have 17 vacancies combined.

The reason behind the growing diplomatic vacuum is significant.

Around 2,000 US diplomats have left the Foreign Service over the last year through layoffs or forced retirements. That exodus from a workforce estimated at more than 13,000 in 2024 is stripping the United States of decades of institutional knowledge, crisis-response experience, and highly specialized language skills that took generations to build.

Current and former State Department officials say the US now finds itself at a critical disadvantage at a time when it is facing an escalating number of foreign policy crises around the world.

For Belize, the absence of a confirmed ambassador means the relationship is being managed through interim diplomatic leadership. A nominee for the Belize post has been put forward, but nominees must first undergo scrutiny by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and receive full Senate approval before they can assume their duties.

In the meantime, Belize remains without the full diplomatic weight and influence that a confirmed US ambassador brings, at a moment when strong bilateral relationships matter more than ever.

The question Belizeans should be asking is simple:

With a territorial dispute still unresolved, growing security challenges, and an economy that depends heavily on its relationship with the United States, can Belize afford to remain an afterthought in Washington’s diplomatic priorities?

The map suggests it already is.
