Ministry of Rural Transformation, Korea and UNICEF partner to install rudimentary water system in Machakilha, Toledo

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour and Local Government noted that Machakilha, one of the most remote villages in Southern Belize, located at the southwestern edge of the Toledo District, continues to receive critical rural development to improve the quality of life of its residents.

On September 26, 2024, the community celebrated the inauguration of its newly installed rudimentary water system, which now provides a stable source of potable water to every household in the village.

To make this milestone possible, the Ministry of Rural Transformation, collaborated with the Republic of Korea and UNICEF through their Water, Sanitation and Hygiene program.

Officials from the Ministry dug a 200-feet well and installed a submersible pump powered by solar energy.

They tripled the village’s water storage capacity by installing two additional tanks, each capable of storing ten thousand liters.

With this new water system, GOB and its development partners have solved the chronic water shortage problem that Machakilha faces annually, especially during the dry season.
