By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) has issued a statement over recent viral photos showing the Haulover Bridge.

“It is disheartening to see the recent uninformed public outcry over the Haulover Bridge. It is unfortunate that some people, either through mischief, ignorance or attention seeking, run to Facebook without taking the time to investigate, or even simply ask,” the MIDH said.

The MIDH further explained that “the main bridge has 6 expansion joints which are designed to expand and contract depending on a change in temperature. Under the pavement there is a “Wabo” expansion joint made of rubber and so when we placed the Hot Mix Asphalt Cement; which is superheated to over 400 degrees Celsius, we have to protect the expansion joint with plywood to prevent it from getting damaged.

The section you see breaking out is to be cut and removed and replaced with a steel plate and asphalt filler. The asphalt filler will be able to expand and contract.”

The MIDH calls on all Belizeans to be better especially when it comes to the development of this country.
