By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries has responded following the tragic killing of two civilians, Evadnie Jones, 66, and her 39-year-old son, Luke Jones. The pair was shot dead in their yard on Cedar Street during the night of Friday, July 4. Their deaths have sent shockwaves through the local community, prompting widespread calls for justice and action against escalating violence.

Minister Kareem Musa expressed profound sorrow at the loss. “There is absolutely no justification for murder, especially the cold-blooded killing of innocent civilians. We condemn this despicable act in the strongest possible terms. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Jones family and the entire community as they mourn this devastating loss,” Musa stated.

The Belize Police Department has initiated a full investigation into the incident, emphasizing the urgency to apprehend those responsible. “The Belize Police Department will not rest until those responsible are brought to justice,” said Commissioner of Police Dr Richard Rosado. He assured the public of their commitment to protect every citizen and to work proactively within communities to counter the efforts of those who seek to disrupt peace.

In response to this tragic event, there are renewed calls for tougher gun and gang legislation to curb the violence affecting innocent citizens. The Ministry of Home Affairs has reiterated its support for the Leadership Intervention Unit (LIU), which assists individuals seeking to exit gang life and reintegrate into the community. This model of intervention is deemed essential for achieving lasting peace.

The Government of Belize maintains a zero-tolerance approach to gun violence and has urged community members to assist law enforcement by reporting any information related to the incident. Citizens are encouraged to reach out anonymously through Crime Stoppers or contact their nearest police station.

A briefing has been scheduled for this afternoon beginning at 2 p.m.
