By Aaron Humes: It’s something rarely talked about – but suicide and mental health are increasingly taking up space in the overall discussion of health issues.
Over the next two days, the Ministry of Health and Wellness is engaging the press in addressing ethical and responsible reporting on the issue, seeking to alter the narrative from the sensational to the supportive.
Per Director of Public Health and Wellness Dr Melissa Diaz Musa, 37 cases of suicide were reported in 2023 and more than 1,900 new diagnoses of mental health issues were made.
The press’ role is not to sensationalize but to tell the stories of recovery and shine a light on the causes of mental health issues and suicide, including associated conditions such as depression and substance abuse.
The Ministry also recognizes that journalism itself can be a draining profession and so is offering support to journalists on the frontline of critical reporting on a daily basis.
