By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade has issued a statement regarding the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the transfer of Belizean national Joseph Budna to the Republic of Guatemala, although there is no indication that there will be a press conference or indeed any opportunity for the press to ask questions.
The Ministry says it is supporting the Belize Police Department’s investigation and has directed the Embassy of Belize in Guatemala to engage with Guatemalan authorities to gather information.
The Ministry says it has confirmed that there is no evidence to suggest that Guatemalan authorities entered Belize to apprehend Budna. The Embassy of Belize in Guatemala has been instructed to provide consular support to Budna, ensuring he receives the necessary medical assistance and protection of his human rights.
The Ministry affirmed its commitment to upholding the rights and welfare of all Belizean nationals, both at home and abroad.
