By Zoila Palma:  The Ministry of Agriculture, through its Extension and Research Services and with funding support from the Climate Resilient and Sustainable Agriculture Project (CRESAP), recently hosted a soursop training session at the Agriculture Department Conference Room.

The workshop brought together 16 farmers interested in improving the management and productivity of their soursop orchards through sustainable farming practices.

The training opened with remarks highlighting the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening Belize’s fruit tree sector through education and capacity-building initiatives.

The Ministry also recognized National Fruit Tree Coordinator Enrique Rivas for his efforts in promoting sustainable fruit production, while acknowledging the support of the CRESAP project, represented by Neidy Moh, for helping make the event possible.

During the first session, Extension Officer Victor Kuk discussed the nutritional value and health benefits of soursop, emphasizing its rich vitamin and mineral content, antioxidant properties, and growing market demand. Research Extension Officer Israel Pech then led a presentation on best practices for soursop cultivation, covering topics such as site selection, planting, nutrient management, pest and disease control, irrigation, and maintaining healthy, productive trees. Farmers also participated in discussions, sharing their experiences and challenges.

The training concluded with a hands-on demonstration of Good Management Practices (GMPs), where participants learned proper pruning techniques, hand pollination methods, and fruit bagging procedures aimed at improving fruit quality, increasing yields, and reducing pest and disease problems.

At the end of the workshop, each farmer received a soursop management toolkit containing pruning tools, a pruning saw, sanitization bottle, fruit bagging nets, a pollination brush, and a measuring tape to help implement the techniques learned.

The Ministry of Agriculture expressed appreciation to its Extension Service, Research Unit, and the CRESAP Project for their collaboration in organizing the training.
