By Zoila Palma: Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries Rodwell Ferguson on August 19 handed over 9,150 bags of fertilizer valued at nearly $800,000 to the Citrus Growers’ Association (CGA) in Pomona, Stann Creek. The handover took place during a brief ceremony at the CGA headquarters.
The event was attended by Ministry CEO Servulo Baeza, members of the Ministry’s senior management team, and representatives of the CGA.
Minister Ferguson reaffirmed the Government of Belize’s commitment to supporting the agriculture sector and expressed hope that the country’s citrus industry will continue to recover and regain its strength.
CGA Chairman Ecclestone Irving thanked the government for the assistance, noting that citrus growers had been eagerly awaiting the fertilizer support. The assistance is expected to help producers address some of the challenges affecting the industry and improve the productivity of citrus farms.
Following the ceremony, the fertilizer was immediately distributed to members of the association. The support comes as Belize’s citrus industry continues efforts to rebound from years of challenges caused by citrus greening, with growers working to restore production and strengthen the sector.
