By Zoila Palma: Today, Taiwan’s coast guard said that it warned and shadowed a Chinese research vessel operating in sensitive waters west of the island, marking the third time the ship has been detected in the area since May.
Taipei views the repeated presence of Chinese vessels near Taiwan as part of ongoing maritime pressure.
The vessel, identified as the Tongji, was spotted late Thursday about 24.9 nautical miles northwest of Taiwan’s Penghu Islands, which are home to important Taiwanese military facilities, Reuters report.
Taiwan’s coast guard said the ship was not seen deploying or towing equipment, but dispatched a patrol vessel to sail alongside it and issue strong warnings to leave the area.
By this morning, the Tongji had moved to about 28 nautical miles west-southwest of Liuqiu Island and was continuing to sail southeast, according to Taiwan’s coast guard.
Taiwan’s Coast guard said it would proactively deploy patrol vessels in response to Chinese ships and would continue to defend Taiwan’s sovereignty and the safety of its waters.
