By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) recently conducted a productive initiative aimed at strengthening the agricultural knowledge of young students in Belmopan.

The Ministry distributed seedlings and gardening supplies to 2 nursery schools, Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Martin’s School, as part of an effort to build agricultural capacity at an early age.

In addition to the seedling distribution, MAFSE organized a hands-on transplanting session to introduce the students to the basics of gardening.

The Ministry noted that the purpose of this initiative is to instill an appreciation for agriculture among young learners and lay a foundation for future farmers by promoting the importance of food security and sustainable practices.

“By empowering young students through practical gardening experiences, the Ministry aims to foster a mindset that values sustainable food production. This school garden initiative supports the development of critical skills that are essential for creating a more resilient agricultural sector,” the Ministry said.

Students at both Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Martin’s School will now have the opportunity to grow their own food while learning various agricultural activities, ranging from nursery management to harvesting.

These lessons also cover important concepts such as sustainability, climate resilience, and food security, which are key components of Belize’s agricultural future.

MAFSE has previously assisted both schools by rehabilitating their cover structures.

This initiative reinforces the Ministry’s commitment to building a resilient agricultural sector in Belize by investing in the next generation of farmers.

By embracing school garden projects, MAFSE envisions a brighter future where young Belizeans are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to contribute to the nation’s food security and sustainability efforts.

Distributing the garden supplies and seedlings was Extension Officer Abimael Puck along with other technical personnel from the Ministry of Agriculture.
