By Zoila Palma: On June 9, 2026, potato growers from the Orange Walk and Cayo District met with Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture Luis Alex Balona, and senior staff of the Ministry in Belmopan.
Discussions included crop availability, supply, marketing and contraband of potatoes, especially expressing concern for the sale of the Belizean-grown Red La Soda potato variety, which should be on the market exclusively for the next few months.
Minister Ferguson and Minister Balona committed to assisting the farmers sell their produce and ensuring the Belize market remains free of contraband.
