By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize’s Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, Jose Abelardo Mai, is making significant strides in advancing agricultural cooperation during his visit to Palenque in the state of Chiapas, Mexico. Attending a pivotal meeting of the Comité Internacional Regional de Sanidad Agropecuaria (Regional International Committee on Agricultural Health- CIRSA), the governing body of the Organismo Internacional Regional de Salud Agropecuaria (Regional International Organization for Agricultural Health – OIRSA), Minister Mai is focused on critical agricultural health issues affecting the region.
One of the primary topics on the agenda is the New World Screwworm, a pest that poses a severe threat to livestock. Strategies to mitigate its impact are being thoroughly discussed, ensuring the protection of agricultural health across borders.
During his time in Chiapas, Minister Mai has engaged in fruitful discussions with the new Mexican Secretary of Agriculture, Dr. Jorge Berdegué Sacristán. Their conversations have centered on addressing the New World Screwworm and enhancing Belize’s cattle export status to Mexico. These discussions are crucial for bolstering agricultural trade and cooperation between Belize and Mexico.
Accompanying Minister Mai is Belize’s Ambassador of Investment, Jaime Briceño, further emphasizing the importance of this visit for Belize’s agricultural sector.
