By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 47-year-old maintenance worker from Mile 8 has been granted bail after pleading not guilty to aggravated assault and threat of death charges involving a police inspector, while his daughter has accused the officer of repeatedly harassing her father.
David Funes, also known as “Bonna,” appeared unrepresented before the Chief Magistrate in Belize City on Wednesday, charged in connection with an October 1 incident involving a police inspector who is attached to the Mahogany Heights Sub-Police Station.
According to court allegations, the inspector was performing special duties at CK’s Shop in the Mile 8 community around 7 p.m. when he encountered Funes, who was reportedly drinking a beer outside the establishment.
The inspector alleges that after telling Funes he could not remain at the location, Funes threatened him, saying, “Nuh because you dah police I fraid feh you. You wah dead.”
A physical confrontation reportedly followed, during which Funes allegedly pushed the officer in the chest. The inspector said he grabbed Funes, and a struggle ensued before Funes fell, got up and walked away.
During Wednesday’s arraignment, Funes’ daughter addressed the court, alleging that the inspector had been harassing her father following a previous court case that was dismissed. She claimed the officer had even attempted to prevent her father from visiting the neighbourhood shop, despite the shopkeeper having no objection to his presence.
She also informed the court that her father has a history of mental health difficulties and had previously been prescribed medication. She said she had requested his medical records but was advised they would take approximately one week to obtain.
The Chief Magistrate urged her to secure those records as soon as possible to help the court understand Funes’ condition and determine how to proceed with his case.
Funes was offered bail of $800 plus one surety of the same amount, with no additional conditions imposed. His daughter was advised that she could sign as his surety but would be responsible for ensuring his attendance at subsequent court hearings.
The matter was adjourned until December 14, 2026.
