By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police are monitoring an increase in suspected criminal activity in an area of Belize City following a shooting on Cairo Street that left a 20-year-old man and a 17-year-old minor injured last Friday.
According to Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith, the shooting occurred on October 23, 2026, when Michael Casires and the minor were socializing with several other individuals inside a yard on Cairo Street.
An unidentified gunman reportedly opened fire on the group, injuring both victims. They were transported to the hospital, where they received treatment and were subsequently released.
During Wednesday’s police briefing, Smith acknowledged that investigators have observed increased activity in the surrounding area, prompting heightened monitoring and the deployment of technological resources and other proactive policing measures.
The shooting occurred less than a week after two men, Deon Jones and Lloyd Faber, were injured when a gunman opened fire on a group socializing on King Street on October 17.
When questioned about whether the two incidents were connected, Smith said investigators had not reached any conclusive determination.
Police have not established a definitive motive for the Cairo Street shooting, but Smith indicated that the department continues monitoring activity in the area as part of its crime prevention efforts.
