By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 26-year-old Mexican national living on Caye Caulker has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison after being charged with aggravated assault upon a female police officer.

Francisco Javier De Jesus Carmona appeared on Monday afternoon in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he was accused of assaulting a female police officer while she was on duty on Saturday, August 30, 2025. With the assistance of a translator, Carmona initially pleaded guilty but then claimed he did not remember the incident. The Magistrate entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

The prosecutor strongly objected to bail, arguing that Carmona posed a flight risk as a foreign national whose immigration status remains uncertain. Despite Carmona’s claim that he holds a work permit, the court was unable to verify his status, and bail was denied.

He has been remanded until October 28, 2025.
