By Breaking Belize News Staff: After spending exactly three months on remand, Melroy Mathew Pelayo, 27, has been granted bail while awaiting trial on a charge of aggravated assault with a firearm.

Pelayo, a fisherman and barber from the Fabers Road area of Belize City, appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Neeshad Rohammad on Friday and requested bail after spending approximately 90 days at the Belize Central Prison.

The court granted him bail in the sum of $3,000, with either one surety for the full amount or two sureties of $1,500 each.

Pelayo must report to the Raccoon Street Police Station every Friday between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. He was also ordered not to contact the virtual complainant or any prosecution witnesses directly or indirectly, remain at least 100 feet away from the complainant, continue residing at his Swanka Street address, and not be charged with any other offence while on bail.

Pelayo was initially arraigned on May 21, 2026, along with 21-year-old Demarion Lamb. The two men pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault with a firearm and were initially remanded.

The charge stems from an incident on March 16, 2026, on Neal’s Pen Road Extension. A man told police that he and his 17-year-old nephew were in the yard of an abandoned building when two men arrived on a red motorcycle.

Police allege that the motorcycle stopped near the property and the passenger produced a firearm and pointed it in the direction of the complainant and his nephew. The two reportedly ran behind the building for cover and shortly afterward heard what sounded like gunshots.

According to the report, a police mobile subsequently intercepted the motorcycle. Police allege that Pelayo was apprehended and was seen with a firearm in his hand, while the other suspect initially escaped.

Pelayo and Lamb, who has also since been granted bail, are scheduled to return to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on September 2, 2026.
