By Breaking Belize News Staff: Dayra Hinds, a 40-year-old Ladyville resident and customer care agent at Maya Island Air, narrowly avoided jail time this week after settling a $9,000 debt stemming from unpaid rent.

Hinds was detained on November 29, 2024, at her workplace at the Philip Goldson International Airport after a committal warrant was issued for her failure to comply with a court-ordered judgment from 2022. The court had initially ruled that Hinds owed her landlord $14,000 in back rent from 2019, instructing her to pay in monthly installments of $100. Despite making a $5,000 payment, she defaulted on the remaining balance.

After spending the weekend in custody, Hinds managed to pay the outstanding $9,000 by Monday morning, securing her release. However, her financial troubles are not over. Hinds still owes an additional $3,000 in rent from 2022 to 2023, which she and her common-law husband must pay by December 30, 2024. Failure to do so could result in another six weeks of imprisonment.

Under Belizean law, unpaid civil judgments do not disappear after imprisonment. Even if an individual serves time for non-payment, the debt remains until it is fully settled.
