By Zoila Palma: Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Marconi Leal Jr., is celebrating his father, former Belize Rural North Area Representative Marconi Leal Sr., as a cancer survivor after he was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer two years ago.
In an emotional Independence Day tribute, Leal Jr. reflected on his father’s diagnosis, treatment and recovery, describing his continued presence as a blessing to their family.
Leal Jr. recalled that two years ago, while preparing for the Independence Day parade, his father was too weak to march following cancer treatments. He said the family had been devastated when doctors confirmed that Leal Sr. had stage 4 prostate cancer that had spread to the bones throughout his body. “I’ll never forget two years ago when we waited for the parade to start. Before it even started he realized he could not march because he didn’t have the energy to do it after his Cancer treatments,” Leal Jr. shared.
The Minister of State said the diagnosis came as a shock, particularly after a second medical opinion reportedly gave his father a life expectancy of no more than two years.
However, Leal Sr. refused to accept that prediction. Recalling his father’s response after being told about the prognosis, Leal Jr. said, “NEVER! ‘I feel good and I’m fine, Unu could want believe they simple doctors who just wants to make money.’” Looking back, Leal Jr. said the family now recognizes his father’s determination as an important part of a journey that has seen him continue living well beyond that initial prognosis.
Leal Jr. explained that his father underwent treatment and radiation, with the family learning over time how the treatments were helping to manage the disease.
Six months later, they received encouraging news about the response to treatment.
Today, Leal Sr. is in remission and remains active, with his son describing his recovery as remarkable given the extent of the cancer documented in medical tests and imaging. “Through all this he wanted to live. Now, he’s in remission, alive and kicking out and about every single day, proof that faith, courage, and science can share the same stage,” he said.
As the family celebrated Belize’s 2026 Independence festivities together, Leal Jr. expressed gratitude for the opportunity to stand beside his father and reflect on the values he instilled in him.
