By Breaking Belize News Staff: Charles Patrick Herbert, 42, who was out on bail for allegedly attempting to murder his own brother in 2022; found himself in a world of trouble after he was caught drinking in public. The court, however, was willing to give him a break because the offense is a misdemeanor but his estranged common-law-wife showed up in court and withdrew the bail she had signed for him.
Herbert appeared in court unrepresented on Wednesday and was read a single count of drinking in public. He quickly pleaded guilty and was given a fine of $25 plus $5 cost of court. He was given until January 29, 2024 to pay, in default, one week in jail.
But before he was free to go, Herbert was taken to another court for breaching conditions to his $5,000 bail for the charge of attempted murder against his brother. The prosecution requested that his bail be revoked, however, the court decided that since public drinking is a misdemeanor offense, the request for his bail to be revoked was denied.
And just when luck seemed to be on his side, he learned that hell hath no fury like a woman scorned as his estranged common-law-wife appeared in court and withdrew her surety, which she had signed for him. She told the court that she no longer wants to be his surety because he gets violent when he drinks, causing her to fear for her safety. And with that, his bail was revoked until he could secure another surety, which he did not; remaining in police custody.
