By Aaron Humes: Late on Monday night, law enforcement officers in Belize City found themselves under fire as they carried out their duties at a vehicular checkpoint on New Road. Police arrested one man following the incident that unfolded shortly before 11 PM.
According to police sources, while conducting routine checks, Officers Maxine Makin and Byron Samuels were unexpectedly targeted, with at least four shots fired in their direction. The officers swiftly returned fire in self-defense.
Assistant Superintendent Stacy Smith provided details about the incident, emphasizing that fortunately, the officers involved were unharmed. As she explained, an officer reported hearing gunfire from Victoria Street and upon investigating, encountered a suspicious individual; when instructed to stop, the suspect fired upon the officer, who then returned fire.”
The investigation is still in its early stages, and police are continuing to gather evidence and witness statements as they work to understand the full circumstances surrounding the encounter.
