By Zoila Palma: Today, Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton issued a statement saying that the Prime Minister is “unhinged.”
“Belizeans listened with grave concern as the Prime Minister responded sharply to a question from a local reporter about his wife recent official visit to Guatemala. The visit is being scrutinized given Belize’s interventions at UNGA on the increasing tensions between our two territories as we prepare to make oral arguments at the ICJ. This is a fair question,” Panton explained.
Panton further said that the Special Envoy and she acknowledges her advocacy, especially for children with special needs, and applaud her stellar service to Belize.
“The question about her visit is not an attack on her personally or on her work. The question is about the timing of this visit.
The Prime Minister went to great pains to explain that Mrs. Briceño attended the gathering in Guatemala as Belize’s First Lady and was acknowledged as such. Belizeans are therefore entitled to ask what the visit involved? Why was it considered at this time? What message was it intended to send?,” Panton expressed.
The Leader of the Opposition said that if the Ambassador was recalled to signal Belize’s protest over Guatemala’s actions, the Government should explain how the First Lady’s visit, at the invitation of the Guatemalan First Lady, is consistent with the country’s current diplomatic stance.
The UDP further called on Prime Minister John Briceno to be “transparent, answer legitimate questions directly, and treat the press with the respect its essential role in our democracy demands.”
