Leader of the Opposition says Belizeans demand immediate relief on rising cost of fuel

By Zoila Palma:  Today, Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton issued a statement demanding immediate relief on rising cost of fuel.

Panton says that after listening to the Prime Minister’s recent 12-minute announcement on budget cuts as a response to the rising cost of fuel, the “response is, at best, a half-measure and at worst, a distraction from the real issue.

Belizeans are not asking for cosmetic adjustments.

We are demanding meaningful, immediate relief.”

Panton says that across Belize, families are struggling to put food on the table.

“Transportation costs are consuming already stretched incomes. Small businesses and small farmers are fighting to survive. Yet, the government’s response falls painfully short of what this moment requires.

Fuel prices are not just numbers at the pump. They drive every single aspect of our economy from the cost of goods on supermarket shelves to the price of getting to work,  attending school, and accessing healthcare.  As things stand now, Belizeans are being crushed under that weight,” Panton added.

Panton also questioned what is the plan for targeted subsidies, not just the $3 promised for bus operators, but for other transport providers and for the wider productive sector?

“Which infrastructure projects will be deferred? How will the $30 million proposed offer direct relief to households?

What $25 million goods and services will be suspended? How will this offer direct relief to the most vulnerable?

How will this impact jobs, particularly with over 600 new public service hires projected this year in the Budget Estimates?

Belizeans deserve honest answers. Not political fluff. Not deflection. We are living in unprecedented times that demand decisive leadership,” Panton said.

The Leader of the Opposition says that the UDP stand ready to support any genuine, transparent, and impactful measures that bring REAL relief to Belizean households.
