By Zoila Palma:  Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton has issued a statement expressing solidarity with the Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU) and “all educators across the nation who have chosen to exercise their democratic right to organize and speak out on matters that directly affect their livelihoods, their classrooms, their students and  the quality of education in Belize.”

“The recent directive from the Ministry of Education mandating that schools remain open during the BNTU’s simultaneous membership meeting undermines the spirit of respectful dialogue and mutual cooperation that should characterize the relationship between the government and our nation’s teachers. Teachers are the backbone of our educational system and the nurturers of Belize’s future,” Panton said.

Panton called on the Ministry to engage in open and meaningful discussions with the Union’s leadership and seek to act with more than a promise and a prayer.

“The use of Education Rules and statutory instruments to enforce compliance should not come at the expense of respect for teachers’ rights and freedoms,” Panton added.

Panton commended President Nadia Martin-Caliz and the BNTU for their steadfast commitment to advocating on behalf of their members as well for the broader education sector.

Panton pledged that the Opposition stands ready to support the BNTU in its pursuit of fairness, transparency, and respect.
