By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority has appointed Patient Flow Officers to its Accident and Emergency Department, marking the first such initiative in the hospital’s 30-year history.
KHMHA says the appointments form part of its Institutional Improvement Plan, which is aimed at improving patient care and operational efficiency at Belize’s national referral hospital.
The Patient Flow Officers will be responsible for overseeing the movement of patients through the A&E Department, from arrival and assessment to treatment, admission, or discharge. Their duties will include coordinating communication between clinical teams, monitoring patient flow, and helping to address operational bottlenecks.
According to KHMHA, the initiative is expected to help reduce waiting times, improve bed allocation between the Emergency Department and inpatient wards, ensure more timely follow-up of laboratory and imaging results, and support better discharge planning.
“Long waits affect patient outcomes. Our Patient Flow Officers will address this challenge directly by ensuring every patient moves through KHMHA’s Emergency Department as safely and efficiently as possible,” said KHMHA Chief Executive Officer Sharine Reyes.
Reyes added that the initiative reflects the hospital’s commitment to delivering better care for Belizeans.
KHMHA says it remains committed to providing timely, high-quality, and patient-centered care while strengthening Belize’s health system.
