By Aaron Humes: The Director of the Joint Intelligence and Operations Center (JIOC) coordinated the national response to the Holy Thursday hijacking incident aboard a Tropic Air flight, as recounted at a press conference held by the Ministry of Civil Aviation on Wednesday afternoon.
Major Ruben Cowo issued the first alert after 8:30 a.m., allowing the Belize Defence Force (BDF) and Coast Guard to deploy their special operations groups, and directed deployment to the sites of potential landing areas, from the Philip Goldson International Airport to San Pedro and was even prepared for a potential crash landing at sea.
JIOC also coordinated with Mexican and US authorities to keep them informed of what was going on when it was learned that the hijacker was American and wanted to be taken to the U.S.
Major Francis Usher, CEO in the Ministry of National Security and Border Defense, said that while Belize was prepared for any and all outcomes, the best possible outcome resulted.
