Is San Ignacio and Santa Elena considering a mixed slate again? Trapp or Mai for Mayor?

By Zoila Palma: As the 2027 Municipal Elections draw closer, political attention is once again turning to San Ignacio and Santa Elena, where voters appear to be weighing not only the candidates on the ballot, but also whether they want to maintain a divided or “mixed” municipal council.

Several voters within the Twin Towns have pointed to the possibility of splitting their votes, raising the question of whether the 2027 election could once again produce a mayor and councillors from different political parties.

The Twin Towns have already demonstrated that voters are willing to separate their choices.

In the 2024 Municipal Elections, UDP Mayor Earl Trapp secured a fourth consecutive term while PUP’s Aaron Mai was elected as the only PUP councilor.

Now, the political dynamic is different.

Trapp is seeking a fifth consecutive term after nearly 12 years in office, while Mai has moved from councillor to PUP mayoral candidate and will directly challenge the incumbent.

Mai has campaigned on change, long-term planning and what he describes as a “Master Plan to a greater San Ignacio and Santa Elena,” while Trapp has pointed to his years of service and development record as reasons for voters to maintain continuity.
