By Zoila Palma: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky left the White House Friday without signing a minerals deal with the U.S., following a heated exchange with President Donald Trump.
During the meeting, Trump berated Zelensky, accusing him of being disrespectful and gambling with global peace, AP reports.
The deal, which would have granted the U.S. greater access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals, was called off after the confrontation.
Tensions rose when Zelensky criticized Russia’s broken ceasefire agreements, prompting Trump and Vice President JD Vance to accuse him of ungratefulness.
Trump, who had previously indicated support for Ukraine, clashed with Zelensky over Russia’s role in the conflict, with the U.S. president suggesting that Zelensky’s “hatred” for Putin was a barrier to peace.
Zelensky later expressed disappointment over the fallout, emphasizing Ukraine’s need for security guarantees before engaging in peace talks with Russia.
The breakdown of the meeting has raised concerns over future U.S. support for Ukraine, with some allies urging unity to face the challenges ahead.
