By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Police in Jamaica killed Othneil “Thickman” Lobban, a notorious gang leader, sparking violent protests in Spanish Town, near Kingston, on Thursday, AP reports.
Lobban, described as a leader of the One Order gang, was shot late Wednesday as part of a government crackdown on rising gang violence. His death triggered gunfire and business fires in the area, prompting authorities to impose a curfew and raise the threat level for police officers.
The unrest escalated as residents protested, blocking roads and damaging official vehicles. Police and military personnel were deployed to patrol the streets, with schools and businesses closing in anticipation of further violence.
The Jamaican Constabulary Force urged citizens to cooperate with authorities to maintain peace.
Lobban’s killing is feared to intensify gang violence in a country already struggling with one of the world’s highest homicide rates.
The One Order gang, active for over two decades, is linked to extortion, drug trafficking, and a deadly rivalry with the Klansman gang. Some worry Lobban’s death could fuel more violence in a nation already plagued by organized crime and police killings.
