By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, violence broke out near Kingston after police killed Othneil “Thickman” Lobban, a top leader of the One Order gang, AP reports.
The killing sparked gunfire and the burning of a business in Spanish Town, with schools, businesses, and government agencies closing for safety.
The Jamaican government raised the security threat level following the backlash and urged citizens to remain calm. Police and soldiers patrolled Spanish Town, where protests and road blockages occurred as residents reacted to the death.
Lobban’s killing comes amid a government crackdown on gangs following recent mass shootings.
The One Order gang, based in Spanish Town, is linked to extortion, murder, and drug trafficking, and has been involved in a violent rivalry with the Klansman gang.
The incident raises concerns of further violence in a country with one of the world’s highest homicide rates.
