By Zoila Palma: Two Venezuelan F-16 fighter jets flew over a U.S. Navy destroyer in the Caribbean on Thursday, an incident the Pentagon called a “highly provocative move.”
The U.S. military said the encounter occurred in international waters and accused President Nicolás Maduro’s government of operating like a narco-trafficking cartel, allegations that Caracas has long rejected.
The Venezuelan government has not yet commented on the incident, Reuters report.
The confrontation came just two days after a U.S. strike on a Venezuelan vessel killed 11 people.
Washington said the boat was carrying drugs and linked to the Tren de Aragua gang, which it has labeled a terrorist organization.
The USS Jason Dunham is among at least 7 American warships deployed in the Caribbean, where more than 4,500 U.S. sailors and Marines are conducting military operations and training.
The buildup has further strained relations with Venezuela, which has accused Washington of seeking regime change.
