By Zoila Palma: More than three dozen political prisoners have been released in Venezuela following renewed talks between the interim government and the opposition, according to human rights group Justicia, Encuentro y Perdón (JEP).
The group said 39 political dissidents were freed from various prisons between Friday and Saturday.
Among those released were eight women who had been accused of “narco-terrorism” in 2021, as well as six people accused of working with the United States in an alleged attempt to overthrow former President Nicolás Maduro in 2020. JEP said it would continue monitoring the situation and demanding the release of those who remain imprisoned.
The releases followed a second round of negotiations on Friday between interim President Delcy Rodríguez’s government and the opposition.
The talks are proceeding with U.S. approval following the U.S. military’s ouster of Maduro in January. According to Venezuelan rights organization Foro Penal, 344 political prisoners remained in the country as of September 18.
Families of political prisoners have continued protesting outside the U.S. Embassy in Venezuela and the El Rodeo I prison, which human rights organizations have described as a torture center.
