By Zoila Palma:  The Government of Belize has concluded a three-day Joint Country Portfolio Performance Review with the World Bank Group, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), aimed at strengthening coordination and improving the implementation of development projects across the country.

The review, held from October 26 to 28, 2026, was led by Minister of Economic Transformation Dr. Osmond Martinez and brought together the Financial Secretary, chief executive officers of key ministries, project executing units, and representatives of the three development partners.

Discussions focused on reviewing ongoing projects, addressing implementation challenges, strengthening institutional capacity, and improving coordination among the agencies involved.

One major area of discussion was Belize’s response to sargassum.

The development partners agreed to continue working with the Government to explore restructuring existing investments to support targeted short-term interventions, while identifying opportunities for new investments. Longer-term efforts will focus on helping Belize better map, prioritize, and plan interventions for a more coordinated response.

The World Bank also commended the Government on its Cabinet-approved policy to improve procedures for investment loans under the Public Sector Investment Program.

The policy is expected to help accelerate project readiness, strengthen accountability, and improve implementation.

The review concluded with discussions on reducing duplication, building project delivery capacity, and broadening market participation, as the Government and its partners seek to ensure development investments deliver meaningful results for Belizeans.
