By Zoila Palma: U.S. President Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum spoke by phone Wednesday as the two countries continue negotiations aimed at reaching an agreement on trade, according to a U.S. official and a person familiar with the conversation.
The call comes as Washington and Mexico move closer to an agreement on the future of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
The two sources offered differing descriptions of the conversation.
The person familiar with the call, who spoke anonymously, described it as “so-so” and said new topics were introduced during the discussion, creating some uncertainty.
A U.S. official, also speaking anonymously, described the conversation as “constructive” and said the trade negotiations remain active and are moving in a positive direction, Politico reports.
Mexican officials believed the two sides were nearing an agreement addressing concerns surrounding the USMCA, the North American trade pact signed during Trump’s first term, according to the person familiar with the call. The ongoing review has involved increasingly detailed negotiations between Washington and Mexico over the future of the agreement.
The fourth round of formal U.S.-Mexico discussions has been rescheduled for September 28 and 29 in Washington. The talks follow a third round in July between Mexican officials and U.S. Trade Ambassador Jamieson Greer, where both sides reported progress on areas including automobiles, steel and aluminum, agriculture, labor and economic security.
