International News: U.S. Embassy in Guatemala issues security alert following violence and armed attacks on police

By Zoila Palma:  On January 18, 2026, the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala issued a security alert following reports of violence and armed attacks on police throughout Guatemala City. 

“U.S. Embassy personnel have been told to shelter in place. There is a planned Guatemalan press conference to provide additional details,” the U.S. Embassy noted

Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo declared a State of Emergency on Sunday evening following riots in 3 prisons across Guatemala.

Gang member inmates reportedly held 46 workers hostage and there were attacks at the police in which 8 members of the Policia Nacional Civil lost their lives.
