By Zoila Palma: The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced it will not impose restrictions on cattle imports from Mexico, despite a new case of the damaging New World screwworm pest found in a cow in Tabasco state.
This follows a similar discovery last year, which prompted a temporary ban on Mexican livestock shipments.
The USDA had lifted its November ban on February 1, implementing new protocols to ensure the safety of cattle and bison entering the U.S, Reuters report.
The agency emphasized that its comprehensive pre-clearance inspections and treatment measures will mitigate the risk of screwworm.
The latest detection led to a rise in feeder cattle futures, with traders concerned the USDA might reinstate the ban. U.S. cattle supplies are currently at a 74-year low, pushing beef prices higher due to reduced herds caused by drought.
