By Zoila Palma: The U.S. has reduced tariffs on low-value shipments from China to as low as 30%, down from 145%, according to a new White House executive order.
The move offers relief to major Chinese e-commerce firms like Shein and Temu, Reuters report.
The reduced rate includes a 10% base duty and an additional 20% related to fentanyl concerns. Though commercial carriers handle most of these parcels and can collect duties, the U.S. Postal Service lacks the infrastructure to do so.
Some small packages under $800 may qualify for even lower effective rates if sent via postal carriers.
Despite the change, many Chinese imports—such as medical goods—still face higher tariffs under previous trade actions.
The adjustment comes as part of efforts to ease trade tensions while supporting U.S. manufacturing.
